Visa development

Summary

The Vietnamese Government is reviewing the country’s policies on entry and exit procedures. The Ministry of Public Security will collaborate with other ministries and agencies to submit a proposal to the National Assembly for review and approval in May 2023.

The proposals include extending the period of stay in Vietnam to travelers with a valid visa as well as expanding the number of countries eligible for e-visa application.

See below for full details.

The Details

Subsequent to the lawmaking session led by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on 24 March 2023, the Government Office issued a letter No. 96/TB-VPCP dated 25 March 2023 on entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam.

According to the letter, the Ministry of Public Security is assigned to lead and coordinate with the Ministry of Justice and relevant agencies, to draft the amendments and supplements to the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence in Vietnam. For entry and exit of foreign visitors, the following 3 items are expected to be proposed:

• Increase the validity period of e-visas to 90 days, with single or multiple entries. At present, single entry e-visa has a maximum validity period of 30 days.

• Expand the number of countries eligible for Vietnam e-visa application. Currently, foreigners from 80 countries can register and apply for e-visas.

• Increase the duration from 15 to 45 days for visitors entering Vietnam via the unilateral visa waiver program.

The draft amendment to the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam is expected to be presented to the National Assembly for review in May 2023.
