Qatar | Update to professional titles and classification guide

Summary

Qatar’s Ministry of Labour has published a revised professional title description and classification guide for the private sector, which is set to help streamline the selection of job titles for the Immigration and work visa process.

The detail

The Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, has launched an updated Occupational Description and Classification Guide for Qatar’s private sector as part of a broader initiative to modernise the labour market.

This updated guide, which includes 3,717 professional titles, supports the National Development Strategy’s goal of fostering a competitive labour market by establishing a comprehensive occupational classification system aligned with both Gulf regional and international standards.

Organised into five main categories, with sections and chapters, the guide assigns each professional title a unique seven-digit code to ensure accurate identification and compatibility with the government electronic systems.

It is developed with input from key institutions such as QatarEnergy, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and Qatar Foundation, and the guide reflects a collaborative effort to streamline labour market processes.

Integrated into the Ministry of Interior’s systems, the guide is being implemented in phases. The first phase focuses on enhancing service integration between the Ministries of Labour and Interior, covering areas such as worker recruitment, visa issuance, residency permits, and employment contract documentation. Future phases will expand its application to sectors outside the current scope of the Labour Law.

What this means

The new updates to the professional titles description and classification guide reflects the Ministry of Labour commitment to staying abreast of the evolving labour market in Qatar and the region, supporting the expansion of various industries in the private sector, and promoting the growing diversity of professions. It aims to streamline administrative processes through the use of clearly defined professional titles and skill levels, to support work visa applications.
