Ireland | Transfer of all first time Irish Residence Permit appointments to Dublin

Summary

The Minister for Justice has today announced the transfer of all remaining immigration registration functions from An Garda Síochána to the Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) unit. As a result, effective from January 13th, registration of immigration permission at a local Garda Station will no longer be in operation and instead, all first time registration appointments will now be undertaken at the Burgh Quay Registration Office in Dublin regardless of where in Ireland an individual is living.

The detail

Until now, individuals residing in all areas of Ireland outside of Dublin, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Wicklow and Limerick were required to attend at their local Garda Station to register their immigration permission following arrival in Ireland. From next Monday January 13th however, all first time registrants, regardless of where in Ireland they are residing, will be required to attend in person at the Burgh Quay Registration Office in Dublin, rather than at their local Garda Station.

Individuals will need to request an appointment for the Burgh Quay registration office via the recently established Digital Contact Centre. This will be the only means of securing an appointment and any requests via email, phone or in person will not be facilitated. It is more important than ever therefore for individuals to establish an account with the Digital Contact Centre which can be used to make and amend appointments as well as obtain updates on the status of an application.

It is important to note that any individual who has an existing Garda Station appointment up to 31 January can continue to attend that appointment and is not required to secure a new appointment at Burgh Quay unless they wish to do so.

Applications to renew residence permission are not impacted by this update and all renewal applications continue to be processed via the online portal.

How we can support

While this is a further step towards a more centralised and digitally enabled immigration process, which in the main is to be widely welcomed, it will no doubt impact many individuals, and indeed their employers, who will now be required to travel to Dublin to register their permission rather than having the option to register in their own locality.
