Immigration
Ireland | Introduction of Stamp 1G permission for spouses and partners of General Employment Permit and Intra-Company Transfer permit holders
Summary
Effective from 15 May 2024, eligible spouses and partners of General Employment Permit and Intra-Company Transfer permit holders will be granted Stamp 1G immigration permission. This will allow the holder to take up employment in Ireland without the need to hold a separate employment permit.
The detail
Spouses and partners of General Employment Permit and Intra-Company Transfer permit holders who have been granted family reunification in accordance with current policy will now be granted Stamp 1G permission in place of existing Stamp 3 permission. This permission affords much more favourable employment rights to dependents in relation to labour market access as holders will now be permitted to work in Ireland without the need to hold a separate employment permit.
For couples and families relocating to Ireland this is a very welcome and long-called for move that recognises the importance of attracting key talent to Ireland. For employers, this widens the available talent pool and will facilitate the immediate filling of urgent skills gaps and much speedier employee onboarding.
Eligible dependents already registered in Ireland under Stamp 3 permission do not need to make an application to update their existing Irish Residence Permit (IRP) cards. The new 1G permission will be automatically afforded to such individuals with immediate effect and new IRP cards will only be issued at renewal stage.
How we can support
While this is a progressive and most welcome announcement, we appreciate that this is also a significant change to current immigration and employment permit policy and one that may impact your current employment, immigration and global mobility policies. We are happy to discuss any queries you might have and assist you in navigating these changes.
