What is the Entry-Exit System?
The Entry/Exit System (EES) will digitally register the data of non-EU citizens every time they enter and exit the external Schengen borders and will replace the physical stamping of passports at passport control. This will impact short-term travelers to Europe, collecting information for both visa and visa-free nationals, whether they are travelling for business or tourism.

The initial go-live date was 2022, but now the European Commission has confirmed that it will launch on 10 th November 2024. The delays were due to IT issues and concerns about border controls and travel restrictions.

The EES system will make it easier to detect travelers who have overstayed or made use of false documents.

Their personal data will be retained for up to three years, ensuring an increased monitoring of entries and exits. The European Union authorities will be better equipped to detect violations of the Schengen rules.

The European Commission has said that the EES will be “the most advanced border management system in the world”, linking up all existing national and European systems. The EES go-live date aligns with the go-live date of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which will go live in mid-2025 for visa-free nationals.
