Brazil | Electronic visa platform for Australian, Canadian and United States nationals effective on April 10, 2025

Summary

Effective April 10, 2025, Australian, Canadian and United States nationals are again required to obtain an entry visa before coming to Brazil for business/pleasure. A specific electronic visa platform has been implemented for said nationals, who are now able to secure their visas 100% online to enter Brazil either as tourists or as business visitors.

The Detail

To whom it applies, how to request, validity of visa and activities that are allowed under the e-visa category

Over the past few years, Australian, Canadian and United States nationals were waived of an entry visa to Brazil, a measure that was subsequently renewed year after year. That came, however, to a change as in accordance to Federal Decree 11,515 of 2 May 2023 which came into force on 10 April 2025, these nationals are now once again required to obtain an entry visa before coming to Brazil either for business or tourism purposes.

The visa will be obtained in the form of an electronic visa, meaning that no visa will be stamped to one’s passport nor will there be the need to attend a Brazilian Consulate abroad. The process is entirely online, comprised of personal documents to be uploaded to the platform, paying for a consular fee and waiting due processing and granting of the electronic visa (e-visa). Currently, the e-visa is issued within 5-10 business days.

Other nationalities whom Brazil does not yet waive from an entry visa (e.g., Indian or Chinese nationals) will still need to request stamped visas through the corresponding Brazilian diplomatic representation abroad.

It is worthy of mentioning that the online platform is not applicable for individuals travelling to Brazil to effectively work (e.g., as a blue collar, white collar, legal statutory representative individual) – either on a local employment agreement or receiving their compensation from abroad.

The e-visa will be valid for 10 years for United States nationals as opposed to 5 years for Canadian and Australian nationals. The e-visa will allow stays not exceeding 90 calendar days every migratory year with the possibility of extending the stay for another 90 calendar days in-country.

Migratory year means the period of time between the first effective date of arrival in the country and 12 months ahead. That term is different in concept from calendar year and/or fiscal year.

It is important to highlight that electronic visas (e-visas) can be normally used for the following activities:

• Attending business meetings or visiting the local company premises in Brazil;
• Signing contracts;
• Provide/receive training in office settings;
• Attend conferences/lectures;
• Take part in broad consultancy/audit activities not surpassing 90 calendar days.

Our Vialto Partners team is happy to assist should our clients require assistance with the issuance of the e-visa along with the drafting Invitation Letters enabling individuals to visit Brazil for business purposes.

For the time being, we recommend that clients be aware of the e-visa enactment as the latter should be obtained at least a month prior to the trip to Brazil. Unfortunately, individuals from said nationalities who are found not to be in possession of a valid e-visa might be denied entry to Brazilian territory.

Lastly, Australian, Canadian and United States nationals whose passport yet have a valid stamped visa to Brazil are exempted from obtaining the e-visa.
