It seems that the week of 18-22 November 2024 should finally bring some further clarity regarding the formation attempts of a so-called “Arizona coalition” to establish a new Federal Government in Belgium. In recent months, political tensions and strategic positioning around new tax measures have complicated the negotiation talks.
Last week, Mr Bart De Wever, leader of the New Flemish Alliance (NV-A), increased the pressure, even hinting at the possibility of new elections. Mr. De Wever, who (following another extension of his mission) is still tasked by the King of Belgium with his role as “formateur”. In this capacity, he recently introduced new proposals, once more amending his Supernote, in which Vooruit leader Conner Rousseau noticed ”important openings”, especially from a tax point of view, which – in the nick of time – seemed convincing
enough for him to start further negotiations.
Please note that De Wever’s socio-economic Supernote includes potential reforms touching upon the Belgian labor market, the people’s purchasing power, pensions, as well as suggestions for a more balanced tax system, with wealthier individuals contributing more. However, it needs to be seen, now that Vooruit has decided to be open for further negotiations, if they are prepared to go all the way. Other parties, including NV-A, MR, Les Engagés and CD&V, have already expressed their readiness to proceed, but it can still be a bumpy road. However, further negotiations are expected to be challenging, particularly
regarding tax reforms and maintaining the coalition’s overall objectives.
