Australia | Visa applicant charge increases and other changes from 1 July 2024

Summary

From 1 July 2024, Visa Application Charges for Australian visas have been increased to align with the forecast Consumer Price Index. Other measures introduced from 1 July include:

  • An increase to the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold to $73,150;
  • Amendments to visa conditions to provide additional time for Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482), Temporary Work (subclass 457) and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (subclass 494) visa holders who have ceased employment with their sponsoring employer to find a new sponsor, apply for a different visa or depart Australia;
  • Enhanced migrant worker protection measures;
  • New restrictions on certain temporary visa holders to prevent onshore lodgement of Student visa applications;
  • Extension of Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa arrangements for Republic of Philippines passport holders; and
  • Concessions for UK citizens to apply for a second or third Working Holiday visa without needing to do a period of specified (regional) work.

The detail

Visa Application Charges have been increased with effect from 1 July 2024, with charges indexed in accordance with the forecast Consumer Price Index and rounded to the nearest $5. The notable exception to this is the Student (Subclass 500) visa which was subject to a one-off percentage increase, rather than indexation, in accordance with the 2024-25 Budget Decision Visa Application Charge Uplift. This has resulted in a substantial increase to the Student (Subclass 500) visa charge from $710 for a primary applicant, to $1,600.
