The United Kingdom and Switzerland have announced a four-year extension of the existing Services Mobility Agreement (SMA), ensuring continued mobility for professionals between the two countries. This extension, valid until December 31, 2029, provides essential clarity for businesses and service providers as negotiations for a permanent solution continue within the framework of a Free Trade Agreement.
Extension overview
The recent agreement allows the United Kingdom professionals to travel to Switzerland and work visa-free for up to 90 days per year. During this period, they will not be subject to economic interests tests or required to obtain work permits but an online notification will suffice. Conversely, Swiss professionals can provide services in the United Kingdom under the service supplier visa for up to 12 months, facilitating trade in key sectors such as finance, consultancy, legal services, technology, and the creative industries.
This extension is a significant step in maintaining the flow of skilled labor and services between the United Kingdom and Switzerland, reinforcing the importance of these sectors to both economies.
