United Kingdom | UK Electronic Travel Authorisation to be strictly enforced from 25th February 2026, visitors to the UK will be unable to travel to the UK without a permission

Summary

From 25 February 2026, the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (‘ETA’) requirement will be strictly enforced. Holding an ETA is a legal requirement for visitors to the UK, and from 25 February 2026, carriers will not board eligible visitors without one.

The detail

An ETA is required for those travelling to the UK for visits for up to 6 months, and those transiting landside via the UK. From 25 February 2026 this requirement will be strictly enforced.

Individuals who need to apply for a visa in advance to visit the UK (known as ‘visa nationals’) must continue to do so and should not obtain an ETA.  Those who already hold a valid UK visa, such as a work visa, do not require an ETA.

An ETA can be applied for via the UK ETA app and costs £16. Applicants must apply for an ETA with the passport they will travel with, as the ETA is digitally linked to that document.

It is recommended that applicants apply at least 3 working days in advance of travel. Whilst the majority of ETA applications are processed very quickly, delays can occur.
