The Dutch government will be reintroducing temporary border controls at internal borders, starting December 9, 2024. These controls will initially be in place for six months, until June 8, 2025. The current measures build on practices observed in neighbouring countries, such as Germany and Belgium.
The Dutch government informed the European Commission, EU Council, and EU member states of the intention to reintroduce temporary border controls starting on December 9, 2024. The Minister of Asylum and Migration, emphasized that the purpose of these controls is not only to curb irregular migration but also to maintain national security. The Dutch government has justified these measures as a response to the significant influx of asylum seekers.
Next to the border control of neighbouring countries, controls related to flights to the Netherlands will focus initially on specific flights, for example, Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam), where there is a higher risk of irregular migration and cross-border crime. In order to avoid significant disruption to economic and commuter traffic, the government will maintain cooperation with neighbouring countries to facilitate coordination in border areas.
Cross-border workers and business travellers should be prepared for potential delays or increased checks when crossing borders. To avoid delays, next to carrying valid and appropriate travel documents at all times, travellers are advised to verify whether additional cross-border documents are necessary to avoid potential additional scrutiny.
We advise employers to ensure their mobile workforce travels in compliance with relevant legislation and that they are aware of this increased scrutiny.
