Netherlands | General Election results signal a different direction

Summary

Following the General Election on 29 October 2025, initial results (confirmed by ANP) indicate that the liberal progressive D66 party of Rob Jetten will become the largest party. The Dutch Electoral Council is yet to confirm the final results, however if the ANP is correct then D66 will have the initiative in forming a government.

The detail

The Dutch Newspaper Association (ANP) indicates that D66 is set to emerge as the largest party following the 29 October General Election. Rob Jetten, the leader of D66, said that the result gives him the initiative to open coalition talks. On this basis, parties that formed the previous government are unlikely to return in the same configuration, signalling a potential change in immigration policy.

The Dutch Electoral Council (Kiesraad) will finalise and certify the national results after processing outstanding ballots this week. In the meantime, exploratory coalition talks will start in parallel based on the results announced by the ANP. Further details on potential governing plans, including on immigration and the labour market, will become clearer as negotiations progress. This is usually a process of several months, with the current government remaining as a caretaker in the meantime until a new coalition has been formed.

Vialto Partners will continue to monitor developments and assess any potential impact on global mobility.
