On November 3, 2025, Peru announced it was breaking diplomatic relations with Mexico.
This is due to Mexico’s decision to grant asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is under investigation for her alleged role in the attempt to dissolve Peru’s Congress in December 2022.
Consequently, both countries have withdrawn their diplomatic representation; the embassies now operate with minimal staff, while consular services are limited to emergencies and assistance for Mexican nationals (passports, emergency aid documentation).
For Mexican nationals, the alternative options for renewing passports, voter IDs, and visas are to visit a Mexican Embassy in a neighboring country — for instance, in Colombia, Chile, or Guatemala.

Peruvian nationals wishing to enter Mexico must travel to other Mexican embassies to apply for the visa application or carry out the corresponding consular procedures.
Please take this information into account for trips or if you already live there or you have already scheduled travel plans in the coming months so that they are not affected by the aforementioned situation.
