European Union | Entry-Exit System (EES) for the Schengen area

Summary

The European Union will implement the Entry-Exit System (EES) starting 12 October 2025, with phased introduction across external Schengen borders through April 2026. The system will digitally record entries and exits of non-EU travellers, replacing manual passport stamping. This alert outlines what business travellers and employers should expect, compliance considerations, and actions to take to prepare.

The detail

What is the EES?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a digital platform that records the entry and exit of third-country (non-EU) nationals at the EU’s external borders. Travellers will provide fingerprints, a photo, and relevant travel information. This replaces manual passport stamping, enhances border security, and ensures compliance with the Schengen 90/180-day stay rule.

Business travel impact

Business travellers will undergo biometric registration at their first Schengen entry. Non-compliance (overstays, unauthorised work) may result in sanctions for both individual and employer, records in the Schengen Information System (SIS), possible 5-year travel bans as well as potential audits and inspections to employer’s premises.

We have drafted a comprehensive FAQ that tells you all you need to know about the upcoming change and how to prepare your Business Travel Program for it.
