Austria | Austria–Japan Social Security Agreement to enter into force December 1, 2025

Austria has confirmed the implementation of the administrative agreement linked to the 2024 Austria–Japan Social Security Agreement.

The detail

Published on October 29, 2025, the measure sets December 1, 2025, as the effective date. This agreement is intended to better coordinate social security coverage between the two countries.

• Law No. 166/2025 was published in the Austrian Official Gazette on October 29, 2025.
• Implements the 2024 Austria–Japan Social Security Agreement.
• Administrative implementing agreement was signed on August 21, 2025.
• The agreement enters into force on December 1, 2025.
• Designed to coordinate social security coverage and reduce duplicate contributions.

What this means for employers

The agreement may eliminate dual social security contributions for employees sent between Austria and Japan, reducing cost and compliance requirements. Employers should review current and planned assignments and prepare to request certificates of coverage once the agreement becomes effective.
