From 11 March 2026, new validity requirements will take effect for Training (407) visas, requiring an approved sponsorship and nomination to be in place at the time of visa lodgement. This means that a Training (407) visa application cannot be lodged until both a sponsorship and a nomination are approved, which will increase overall processing times significantly. This change will impact all Training (407) visas applications lodged on or after 11 March 2026.
On 10 March 2026, regulations were registered amending the validity requirements to lodge Training (407) visas. With effect from 11 March 2026, to submit a valid Training (407) visa, there must be an approved Temporary Activity Sponsorship and approved nomination in place for occupational training. These amendments have been introduced as integrity measures in response to concerns raised by the Department of Home Affairs regarding disingenuous Training (407) visa applications and a significant increase in onshore lodgements since mid-2024.
The amendments mean that for some onshore 407 visa applicants with impending visa expiries, the option to apply for the 407 visa from within Australia may no longer be possible if there is insufficient time for the sponsorship and nomination applications to be finalised.
This change will impact all Training (407) visa applications lodged on or after 11 March 2026, except for Training (407) applications sponsored by Commonwealth agencies.
