Australia | Australian immigration English language test requirements updated

Summary

From August 7, 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs has expanded and standardized English language test options for visa applicants. New accepted tests include CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic, and MET, alongside updated provisions for IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, and Cambridge C1 Advanced.

The detail

Paper and computer-based formats are accepted, but online/at-home tests remain ineligible. Lower score thresholds for some visas may make meeting requirements easier, though applicants may need to research the best option and costs.

Key Details:

  • Effective Date: August 7, 2025; earlier test results may remain valid.
  • Newly Accepted Tests: CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic, MET.
  • Existing Tests Updated: IELTS (incl. One Skill Retake), PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, Cambridge C1 Advanced.
  • Formats Accepted: Paper and computer-based only; online/at-home tests not valid.
  • Exemptions: Passport and study-based exemptions unchanged.
  • Impact on Migrants: More choice and slightly lower thresholds for some visas; possible extra costs or delays in selecting tests.

What this means for employers

Employers recruiting overseas talent may benefit from a larger pool of candidates who can meet English language requirements due to the acceptance of additional test types and slightly lower score thresholds for certain visas. This could shorten the time needed for candidates to become eligible, although employers should be aware that applicants may still face additional costs or decision delays when choosing among the expanded test options.
