Qatar’s Ministry of Interior (MOI) has reduced the post-cancellation grace period for Residence Permit holders from 30 days to 14 days. Individuals whose Residence Permits are cancelled must now depart Qatar within the shorter timeframe to avoid daily overstay penalties and any potential impact on future entry.
Previously, individuals had 30 days from the date of Residence Permit cancellation to depart Qatar. Following the update, this period has now been reduced to 14 days and is applicable across jurisdictions within Qatar.
Any stay beyond the revised 14-day period may result in an overstay penalty of QAR 10 per day, which must be settled before final departure. Failure to depart within the 14-day grace period may also lead to the individual being blacklisted from future entry.
Once a Residence Permit is cancelled, individuals must exit Qatar before transitioning to a new employer, as a local transfer is not permitted after cancellation and a new application to work for a new employer must be submitted from overseas.
For employers, the shorter grace period means that cancellation and departure planning will need to start earlier. Cancellation dates should be clearly communicated to affected employees, with travel arrangements, final payments and immigration clearance steps coordinated in advance of the revised deadline.
For employees, the update places greater importance on understanding the cancellation date and completing any required exit formalities promptly, particularly where government payments or other immigration steps remain outstanding before departure.
Where an employee is expected to move to a new employer, the timing of the cancellation should be carefully managed so that the employee has sufficient time to complete the required exit process before any new employment process begins.
Vialto Partners can support employers and employees in assessing the practical impact of the reduced grace period and planning the necessary post-cancellation steps. This may include reviewing cancellation and departure timelines and supporting the clearance of any applicable immigration fines or government payments before departure. Our Team can also assist you and your employees with new work authorization applications, and support with the end-to-end process.
