Middle East | Middle East security & travel update (follow-up) FAQs and access to real-time crisis support dashboard Sunday March 1, 2026

Summary

Following our earlier alert regarding the escalation between Israel and Iran and the resulting regional security and travel disruption, we are issuing this follow-up note to provide additional support resources for clients.

The situation remains highly dynamic, with ongoing security developments, airspace restrictions, flight disruptions, and changing government travel advisories across parts of the Middle East and neighbouring regions. We continue to monitor developments closely.

Additional client support: FAQs

To support your internal response planning and employee communications, we are sharing a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) covering key issues we are currently seeing across client organisations, including travel disruption, employee communications, contingency planning, and mobility-related considerations.

QuestionAnswer
Is there any update on whether tourists or business visa holders in the UAE with upcoming visa expiries need to take any action?At this time, no official guidance has been issued regarding any extensions, grace periods, or special measures for tourists or business visa holders with upcoming visa expiries.

In these extenuating circumstances, we are predicting that extensions will be granted.

Nevertheless, we will use our local PRO network to confirm the current position directly with the relevant government authorities as soon as offices reopen on Monday, March 2. We will share a further update as soon as this is confirmed.

Is there any update for individuals in the UAE whose entry permits/ERPs have been cancelled, or who need to renew them?

At this time, no official guidance has been issued regarding any concessions, extensions, or special measures for individuals whose entry permits/ERPs have been cancelled, or who are due to renew them.

We will use our local PRO network to confirm the current position directly with the relevant government authorities as soon as offices reopen on Monday, March 2. We will share a further update as soon as this is confirmed.

What options are available for individuals whose passports are currently with embassies in the UAE (for example, for renewal or visa processing) where embassy services are temporarily closed?This is being reviewed on a case-by-case basis, as the available options may differ depending on the individual’s nationality, the embassy involved, and the reason the passport was submitted (for example, visa processing or renewal).

We are reaching out to relevant embassies/consulates and local authorities, where appropriate, to understand what support may be available, including whether emergency travel documentation may be issued in urgent cases.

We recommend that affected individuals and employers:

  • confirm their current visa status (if a tracked employee or dependent with Vialto, we will have this information);
  • confirm which embassy/consulate currently holds the passport;
  • assess whether there is any urgent or essential travel requirement; and
  • contact us so we can help review the available options and possible escalation routes based on the specific circumstances.

We will share further updates as more information becomes available.

Do we have any indication of when the US Embassy in the UAE may reopen?

At present, reopening timelines are highly uncertain and may change at short notice, particularly where closures are driven by security considerations and official instructions.

If embassy staff are operating under a “shelter in place” instruction, this would generally indicate that the closure is security-related rather than an administrative delay. In these circumstances, it is not possible to assume reopening the following day.

We recommend monitoring official embassy communications closely and reassessing once further updates are issued.

UAE: Can an individual cross a border (for example, by land) without a valid passport if their current passport is with an embassy?As a general position, international travel would not be permitted without a valid, current passport. An expired passport would not normally satisfy UAE exit or land border requirements.

We therefore would not recommend attempting to cross a land border (including to a neighbouring country) while the valid passport remains with the embassy. Doing so may result in refusal at the border and could create additional complications.

If embassies within the UAE reopen, is it likely that passports can be retrieved immediately, regardless of the reason it was submitted (for example, visa stamping/processing)?

If the embassy reopens, passport collection may still be subject to:

  • revised collection procedures;
  • reduced operating capacity; or
  • delays linked to the reason the passport was submitted (for example, visa or consular processing status).

For this reason, immediate retrieval cannot be assumed, even after reopening. We recommend checking the embassy’s official communications and confirming collection arrangements directly (or through support channels) once services resume.

Are there any interim options or practical steps individuals/employers should consider while waiting for the embassy to reopen in the UAE?The most prudent approach is generally to remain in-country until the valid passport is physically returned, and to follow local authority and embassy guidance.

Recommended interim steps include:

  • Do not attempt border travel until the valid passport has been returned.
  • Monitor official embassy communications closely for reopening and passport collection updates.
  • If the closure becomes prolonged, consider whether the individual’s home country consulate may be able to advise on emergency travel documentation or other support options (subject to eligibility and local requirements).
  • Contact us so we can help review the circumstances and support with enquiries/escalation where appropriate.

At present, the most practical approach is to remain in-country and continue monitoring updates until clearer guidance becomes available.

For Saudi Arabia (KSA), if an employee is currently outside the country and their visa is expiring soon, can they renew their Iqama (Residence Permit) and Exit/Re-Entry Permit while outside Saudi Arabia?

Yes—we can assist with this.

In many cases, it is possible to renew an employee’s Iqama (Residence Permit) and Exit/Re-Entry Permit while the individual is outside Saudi Arabia, subject to the employee’s status and the employer’s ability to process the renewal through the relevant systems and authorities.

Please contact us with the employee’s details and expiry dates, and we can review the specific circumstances and advise on the available renewal options.

For travellers globally, what should they do if they are stranded at an airport due to flight cancellations and their visa/immigration status is close to expiring?If a traveller is unable to depart due to flight cancellations or disruption, they should contact the border/immigration authorities at the airport as soon as possible to explain that they are unable to leave because of circumstances outside their control and to request a temporary extension (or other appropriate immigration concession), where available.

If an extension cannot be granted, it may still be possible to request written confirmation or evidence that the traveller has notified the authorities and sought guidance. This may be helpful to retain and present when departing the country, if needed.

We also recommend that travellers:

  • keep records of cancelled flights, rebooking attempts, and airline communications; and
  • avoid leaving the airport/immigration area (where applicable) without understanding the potential immigration implications.

Vialto can assist with contacting local authorities and supporting extension requests, where possible, depending on the jurisdiction and circumstances.

Should employees and their family members try to leave affected countries at this time?

At this time, it is important that individuals follow official government and local authority advice in relation to safety, shelter, and travel.

Whether an employee or family members should leave an affected country will depend on the specific circumstances, including:

  • local security conditions;
  • official travel and embassy guidance;
  • airport/airspace operational status; and
  • the individual’s immigration/travel documentation status.

We recommend that employers and employees do not make travel decisions based on unverified information and continue to monitor official updates closely.

Please reach out to your Vialto contact for further guidance based on the relevant location and circumstances.
