Mexico | Change of the Head of the Mexican Immigration Institute (INM) and potential future changes in application procedures

Summary

President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced on Tuesday (October 8th) that Mr. Sergio Salomón, current governor of the state of Puebla, will be taking over as the new Head of the Mexican Immigration Institute (INM) as of December, 2024.

Additionally, the INM intends to gradually implement new application submission processes to expedite lead times.

The detail

Although it is still early to identify the potential changes to be implemented once the new Head of the INM takes office, it is to be expected that delays in lead times will occur as well as differences in the review criteria currently applied by immigration agents during the first months of 2025.

As for the intended changes to occur in the near future in terms of submission of applications, a pilot program will be implemented in several INM offices, seeking to strengthen mechanisms to simplify and facilitate processes and reduce lead times.

The following are examples of the intended changes to be implemented:

  • Personal attendance of foreigners will be required upon submission of immigration applications so their biometrics are taken at the beginning of the process.
  • All documents pertaining to the immigration application shall be stored on a USB memory stick.
  • Original documents shall be submitted together with the above USB memory stick, for comparison purposes only.

Actions

  • Vialto will be informing its clients on the documents required to be submitted in accordance with the criteria above-mentioned.
  • Vialto will notify its clients if any changes to their current processes and strategies are necessary in order to comply with the above mechanisms.
