Malaysia | DE Rantau nomad pass enhancement and temporary suspension of new application submissions

Summary

From 1 December 2026, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) will introduce the Enhanced DE Rantau Nomad Pass Framework following the Government of Malaysia’s Budget 2027 announcement. The framework provides a structured renewal pathway for eligible pass holders to stay in Malaysia for up to four years, subject to continued eligibility and approval.

To support the transition, submissions of new DE Rantau Nomad Pass applications will be temporarily suspended from 1 to 30 November 2026. First-time renewal applications will continue to be accepted and processed during this period.

New DE Rantau Nomad Pass application submissions will be paused from 1 to 30 November 2026. First-time renewal applications will still be accepted and processed for existing holders whose initial pass expires by 31 January 2027. All applications submitted from 1 December 2026 will be assessed against the enhanced framework’s new requirements.

The minimum annual income requirement for non-tech talent applicants remains USD60,000. Eligible dependents may also be included in the principal applicant’s renewal application.

What this means

The enhanced framework gives eligible global remote talent greater certainty and flexibility for longer stays in Malaysia, while strengthening eligibility and compliance expectations. It reinforces Malaysia’s appeal to global talent, with greater emphasis on maintaining eligibility, meeting tax obligations and contributing to the economy.
