Luxembourg | Deadline for renewing temporary protection status for Ukrainians approaching

Impact High

Summary

In response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Luxembourg has announced an additional extension of the temporary protection status for Ukrainian refugees. Initially applicable for 12 months starting in March 2022, and previously extended to 4 March 2025, the temporary protection regime has been prolonged until 4 March 2026.

Key changes

1. Renewal of Status and Documentation Format

  • The proof of temporary protection status, previously issued as a printed document on secure paper, will now be replaced with a biometric card.
  • This change applies to both current beneficiaries renewing their status and new arrivals after 5 December 2024.

2. Details for Current Beneficiaries:

  • Existing printed attestations remain valid until their expiry on 4 March 2025.
  • Beneficiaries will receive letters between 29 November 2024 and 7 February 2025 detailing the steps for renewing their status and obtaining a biometric card.

3. Details for New Beneficiaries (Post-5 December 2024):

  • New arrivals will immediately begin the process to obtain a biometric card upon receiving temporary protection status.
  • In the interim, they will be issued a secure paper attestation valid for two months.

4. Rights and Usage:

  • The biometric card serves only as proof of temporary protection status. It is not a residence permit or identity document under Luxembourg’s modified law of 29 August 2008.
  • The card will explicitly state “protection temporaire” under the category field.

Recommended actions

Beneficiaries of temporary protection should:

  • Await instructions via letter for renewing their status and obtaining the new biometric card.
  • Contact the Directorate for Immigration at immigration.desk@mai.etat.lu if they have not received communication regarding the renewal process between 29 November 2024 and 7 February 2025.
  • Complete the renewal process promptly to avoid losing rights associated with the status, including the right to stay, work, and access material assistance in Luxembourg.

What this means for employers

Employers should be aware of the above extension and the issuance of new biometric cards. This will ensure their workforce, including beneficiaries of temporary protection, have the relevant permits and work authorisation in Luxembourg.
