Immigration Service Delivery is facing a significant backlog in processing IRP renewal applications due to the high volume of pending cases. As a result, many IRP cards are expiring before applications are processed, creating uncertainty for employers and employees about continued right to work while renewals remain pending.
Employees whose IRP card has expired may continue working in Ireland under their current permission until 31 August 2026, provided they hold a valid employment permit or are authorised to work without one. This applies to all expired IRP cards, regardless of how long ago they expired.
This interim provision applies only where the employee can show that they submitted their IRP Renewal application, including any change of stamp category (e.g. Stamp 1G to Stamp 1, or Stamp 1 to Stamp 4), before their current IRP card expired, and uploaded all required supporting documents, including a valid employment permit where applicable.
This interim notice does not apply where the employee submitted their renewal application after their current permission had expired.
Vialto Partners can support employers and employees with questions about the applicability of this notice and travel during the specified period.
