Indonesia | Digital nomad visa introduced

Summary

From 01 April, 2024, Indonesian government officials have introduced the Remote Worker Visa (E33G) program. This visa enables eligible foreign nationals to live in Indonesia while working remotely for their overseas employer for up to one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. To qualify, applicants must be employed by a foreign company outside of Indonesia, have a minimum annual income of USD 60,000, and provide proof of sufficient funds, among other requirements.

Fee Information for Remote Worker Visa

Government Cost for Remote Worker Visa: USD 150 + IDR 2,700,000 excluding service fee.

Requirements

Two main requirements to be eligible for the Indonesian Remote Worker Visa are:

1. Proof of salary or income worth at least USD 60,000 per year
2. Employment contract with a company established outside the Indonesian territory

Other documents required for the application alongside other personal details are:

1. Passport of the applicant
2. Recent Colour Photograph
3. Personal bank statement with a minimum amount of USD 2,000 or equivalent in the last 3 months period. (including name, date of period, and balance account.
4. Current Curriculum Vitae
5. Travel Itinerary and Information regarding the schedule of activities in Indonesia
6. Intended residence address in Indonesia (Hotel/Apartment name and address)

After approval

The applicants must enter Indonesia directly within 90 days from the date of e-VISA issuance. Upon arrival, applicants will give biometric information and photo at the immigration checkpoint at the airport. The immigration officer will then attach the Limited Stay Permit (ITAS) and Multiple Exit Re-Entry Permit (MERP) sticker to the passport*. After which, applicants need to complete the local registration process including obtaining a police report and a residence permit.

*However, if the ITAS and MERP couldn’t be issued by the system, the process needs to be completed differently by the officers and during the application process (approx. 10 working days), the applicants cannot leave Indonesia, however they can travel within Indonesia.

Important Information:

● The applicant is prohibited from working for individuals or companies in Indonesia.
● The applicant is prohibited from having any relation with the representative or branch companies, clients, and related projects in Indonesia.
● If the applicant has previously held a Work and Stay Permit sponsored by the Indonesian company, it is not suggested to apply for a remote worker visa. As the Immigration Officer may have the assumption that they will work with the Indonesian company or client by using the remote worker instead of applying for the work and stay permit.
● As this visa is intended for the applicant to work remotely for a company outside of Indonesia whilst visiting for tourism purposes, it is suggested to stay in Bali, Lombok, Sumba and other tourism based areas.
● It is not suggested for the applicant to stay in remote and/or business based areas such as Sumatera, Kalimantan, etc. as the immigration officer may make assumptions that the applicant will perform work for a company or client in Indonesia and therefore insist they must hold an Indonesian work permit instead of the Remote Worker Visa.
● Dependents: Directorate General of Immigration has not launched the Dependent Visa for Remote Worker and we are still waiting for Immigration to implement this type of visa.
