Colombia | Regulations for resident visa holders—requirement to renew before 22 October 2024

Summary

A Colombian Visa Immigration resolution was signed and entered into effect last October 22, 2022 issuing new provisions for the processing of visas for legal stay or residence.

The detail

Colombia is a country that has achieved significant advances in security and unprecedented economic growth. As a result, it is a country that is becoming increasingly attractive – hundreds of thousands of foreigners travel Colombia every year.

In order to enhance the security and improve the quality of life of its citizens and visitors, Colombian visa applications have changed significantly since the law came into effect. One of the most important changes is that a residency visa holder, whose resident visa was issued before October 22, 2022, must transfer/renew their visa within 2 years of the law coming into effect.

Actions

Resident visas issued before October 22, 2022 must be transferred/renewed by no later than October 22, 2024. Failure to transfer/renew a visa stamp may result in an irregular stay in Colombia, exposing the foreign national to penalties by Migracion Colombia until the visa is transferred.
