China | Streamlined processes for business visas and residence permits applications

Highlight

In August, the China Ministry of Public Security announced that new policies will be implemented to enhance the convenience of business visa applications and residence permit applications in China.

The Details

In order to facilitate the entry of business travelers into China, an alternative option is available for those who are unable to apply for business visas in a timely manner at their departure country. These individuals can apply for port visas upon arrival at China airports. This allows them to enter the country and conduct their business activities while their visa application is being processed.

Once in China, these port visas can be converted into multiple-entry business visas at the local Public Security Bureaus. This provides flexibility for business travelers who may need to make multiple trips to China for business purposes.

Additionally, there is a new process in place for foreigners applying for residence permits in China. During the application process, foreigners can now keep their original passports with them. They only need to bring the passport back to the Public Security Bureau once their residence permit application is approved. At that point, the visa label will be placed in the passport.

What this means

The introduction of these two new policies in China reflects a positive trend in international trade and travel, as it provides greater flexibility for individuals traveling to and from mainland China. The ability to apply for port visas upon arrival at Chinese airports, in cases where business visas couldn’t be obtained in the departure country, allows for smoother entry into the country. These port visas can later be converted into multiple-entry business visas, further facilitating business travel.

Additionally, the new policy allowing foreigners to keep their original passports during residence permit applications and bringing them back to the Public Security Bureau for visa labeling once the application is approved streamlines the process and reduces the inconvenience for individuals.

However, it is important to note that the implementation of these policies may still be ongoing, and there could be specific requirements or procedures that need to be followed.
