China | New K-visa for young global STEM talents

Summary

The Chinese government has recently revised the Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners, introducing a new K-visa category for young foreign professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  The policy will take effect on October 1, 2025.

The detail

The key changes include:

  • A new visa category, K-visa, has been added to China’s standard visa classifications, exclusively for qualified young STEM professionals.
  • Applicants must meet criteria established by relevant Chinese authorities and provide support documentation.

What does it mean

According to the new regulations, the new K-visa primarily targets two categories of foreign young STEM professionals who must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree in STEM fields from recognized universities or research institutions (domestic or international); or
  • Be currently engaged in STEM-related education or research at such institutions.

The specific eligibility requirements, application procedures, and system updates for the K-visa are currently being finalized. The Chinese government will release these details through official channels, including Chinese embassy and consulate websites, in the near future.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Exit-Entry Administration of the Ministry of Public Security will subsequently issue guidelines regarding K-visa extensions, renewals, and reissuance procedures within China and stay and residence regulations for admitted young STEM professionals.

Vialto’s insight

China’s progress thrives on global talent participation while simultaneously creating opportunities for professionals worldwide. The newly introduced K-visa establishes a streamlined pathway for young international STEM talents to work in China, significantly enhancing cross-border scientific collaboration:

  • Simplified access: The qualification-based system only requires applicants to meet basic criteria regarding age, academic background, and professional experience, eliminating traditional sponsorship requirements from Chinese entities.
  • Expanded opportunities: Visa holders enjoy full authorization to engage in diverse activities across education, scientific research, cultural exchange, entrepreneurship, and commercial sectors.
  • Enhanced convenience: The policy offers favorable terms including extended validity, multiple entries, and flexible duration of stay.

This initiative demonstrates China’s commitment to openness and its strategy to develop a globally competitive talent framework. The K-visa serves as a vital bridge connecting China with international STEM professionals, injecting new momentum into global scientific innovation and cooperation.
