Chile | Updated list of countries requiring prior authorization or consular visa for entry

Summary

On September 17, 2025, the Chilean government published in the Official Gazette an updated list of countries whose nationals must obtain prior authorization or a consular visa to enter Chile under a Transitory Permanence permit (Permanencia Transitoria).

This update issued under Supreme Decree No. 359 of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, reflects Chile’s policy of establishing visa requirements based on reciprocity and national interest. The decree took effect immediately upon publication (September 17, 2025), as it contains no transitional provisions, therefore applies to all new applications for admission from that date forward.

The Detail

  • Australia has been removed from the list of countries subject to this requirement. As a result, Australian nationals are now able to enter Chile without obtaining prior authorization or a consular visa, provided they meet the general entry conditions applicable to transitory permanence, such as having a valid passport and not exceeding the maximum period of stay permitted by law. By contrast, nationals of countries such as China, India, Venezuela, among others, remain subject to this authorization requirement.
  • This change is particularly relevant for employers and globally mobile employees planning short-term business trips to Chile, as it simplifies the process for Australian travelers by removing the need for consular visa applications prior to entry.
