Brazil | Visa exemption for Chinese nationals (reciprocity)

Summary

The Brazilian government has introduced a visa exemption for Chinese nationals traveling to Brazil for short-term stays, based on the principle of reciprocity.

The detail

According to a publication in the Brazilian Official Gazette (Diário Oficial da União – DOU) on May 7, 2026, Brazil will implement a visa waiver for nationals of the Republic of China holding valid ordinary passports.

Under this measure, eligible Chinese nationals will be exempt from obtaining a visitor visa for stays of up to 30 days, non-extendable, when traveling to Brazil for the following purposes:

  • Tourism
  • Business
  • Transit
  • Artistic or sporting activities

The measure came into effect on May 11, 2026, and will remain valid until December 31, 2026.

The implementation follows a reciprocal approach, in response to a policy adopted by China, in July 2025, which granted Brazilian nationals visa-free entry for stays of up to 30 days for similar purposes, also valid until December 31, 2026.

Impact

This measure is expected to facilitate short-term travel between Brazil and China, particularly for business and tourism purposes, by eliminating the requirement to obtain a visit visa prior to travel.

However, it is important to note that:

  • The visa exemption applies only to short stays of up to 30 days and cannot be extended.
  • It is limited to specific activities (tourism, business, transit, artistic or sporting activities).
  • It does not authorize the performance of remunerated activities or employment in Brazil.

Travelers intending to engage in work or long-term activities in Brazil must obtain the appropriate visa or residence authorization.
