Brazil | Screening of immigrants in transit flights through Brazilian airports to be increased

Summary

The Brazilian Federal Police has decided to scrutinize at a greater level the immigrants who are transiting through Brazil to ensure that they do not misuse the refugee entitlement as a pretext to reach other countries.

The detail

The Brazilian Federal Police has, after extensive studies and based in statistics, identified that a non-negligible volume of immigrants transiting through Brazil was not checking in to their final destination flights. Instead of staying in the “transit waiting rooms” inside the airports, a certain volume of individuals is opting to enter Brazilian territory and either petitioned to be consider refugees or simply entered the country based on an existing and valid visa to be admitted as visitors in this country.

Next, some individuals were found to be using in mala fide the internationally-recognized institute of refuge to transit through Brazilian territory just to head up north, joining the crowds of immigrants heading to the North America countries.

As a consequence, all travelers inbound to a third country having a connection/transfer at a Brazilian airport are cautioned to proceed to their destination flight. If said individuals are willing to be admitted to Brazilian territory, they must comply with all current visa regulations, otherwise may risk of being deported.
