Brazil | Electronic issuance of temporary visas for visa-exempt nationals entering Brazil

Summary

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) has announced that the issuance of temporary visas for entry into Brazil by nationals of countries exempt from visitor visa requirements will be carried out exclusively through an electronic format (e-Visa).

The detail

What is changing?

As of September 1, 2026, the consular process for the issuance of temporary visas will become fully digital for individuals covered by this measure. According to the MRE announcement:

• Applications must be submitted through the Integrated Consular System (SCI);
• All supporting documentation must be uploaded electronically;
• In-person appointments for the submission of physical documents will no longer be required;
• Applicants will not be required to present or surrender their passports for visa stamping purposes;
• Approved visas will be issued electronically and sent to the email address provided by the applicant.

Who is impacted?

This measure applies to nationals of countries that benefit from visitor visa exemption status for entry into Brazil.

What remains unchanged?

Although the visa issuance process will become electronic, the underlying immigration requirements remain unchanged:

• Applicants must continue to provide all documents required for the applicable residence authorization category;
• Prior residence authorization from the relevant Brazilian authorities will remain necessary whenever applicable;
• Registration with the Brazilian Federal Police after entry into Brazil will continue to be required, depending on the immigration category granted.

It is important to note that this measure only changes the method of consular visa issuance, for Visa-Exempt Nationals, and does not modify the legal eligibility criteria or approval requirements for visa applications.

Impact

The digitalization of the process is expected to reduce administrative steps and facilitate the international mobility of professionals who need to enter Brazil for medium- and long-term assignments. The elimination of physical passport submission may reduce logistical timelines and simplify the coordination of global immigration processes.
