Summary
Japanese nationals willing to enter Brazil for business purposes or pleasure will be waived from a Visitor Visa and able to stay up to 90 days in Brazilian territory. The same rationale is to apply for Brazilian nationals visiting Japan up to the same period of time.
Current situation and what is the alteration about
Currently Brazilian nationals do not enjoy a visa-waived entrance in Japan, therefore an electronic Visa is required to enter Japanese territory. Japanese nationals, on the other hand, are visa-waived and can stay in Brazilian territory up to 90 days for business purposes or pleasure.
Effective 30 September 2023, Brazilian nationals will also become eligible for a visa waiver whenever visiting Japan up to 90 days. In this scenario, Japanese nationals, under a principle of reciprocity, will continue enjoying a visa-waived entrance to Brazilian territory.
By the beginning of May 2023, the Brazilian government informed Japan that it would reinstate visa requirements for Japanese nationals, so this piece of news is extremely important for the business community of both countries.
No other details have been communicated by the authorities at this stage, specifically in regards to documents to be presented by Brazilian nationals whenever entering Japanese territory or vice-versa.
Period of validity
It is envisaged that this measure will be valid through 3 years, effective from 30 Sep. 2023 and, therefore lasting until September 2026.
