Australia | New Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early Professionals Scheme Commences

Summary

The Australian Government has launched a new Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) allowing Indian graduates and early career professionals with knowledge and skills in targeted fields of study to live and work in Australia for up to two years. MATES will commence as a pilot program with 3,000 places for primary applicants per program year.

The detail

Commencing 12 November 2024, a new Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) stream has been created within the Subclass 403 (Temporary Work (International Relations) visa. Amongst other key requirements, applicants must:

  • be outside of Australia at the time of application;
  • hold a valid passport issued by the Republic of India;
  • be aged between 18 and 30 (inclusive);
  • Have completed a Bachelor degree or higher qualification from a prescribed institution within the last 2 years in one of the following related industries:
    • renewable energy
    • mining
    • engineering
    • information communications technology
    • artificial intelligence
    • financial technology
    • agricultural technology
  • Meet prescribed English language requirements (overall IELTS or equivalent score of at least 6, with a minimum score of 5 for each of the four parts);
  • not have not previously held a Subclass 403 visa in the MATES stream; and
  • register to participate in a visa pre-application (ballot) process (this is similar to the process recently implemented for certain high demand Work and Holiday Subclass 462 visa countries).

A Subclass 403 visa granted under the MATES stream enables the visa holder to live and work in Australia for up to 2 years. Whilst there is no restriction imposed to limit the visa holder to work in their nominated field of study, MATES is designed to support young professionals expand their skills and networks in the prescribed industries.
