Australia I Core Skills Occupation List released ahead of Skills in Demand commencement on 7 December 2024

Summary

The Australian Department of Home Affairs has today released the Core Skills Occupation List which will apply to the ‘Core Skills’ stream of the new Skills in Demand visa program as well as the ‘Direct Entry’ stream of the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa. The Department of Home Affairs has also confirmed that the new Skills in Demand visa program and new National Innovation Visa will commence on 7 December 2024, although the amending regulations are yet to be registered.

The detail

As outlined in our earlier alerts, in December 2023 the Minister for Home Affairs unveiled the final Migration Strategy report which included announcements that a new Skills in Demand visa will replace the current Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa, as well as a new National Innovation Visa to replace the Global Talent and Business Innovation and Investment visa programs.

The Department of Home Affairs has now confirmed that the Skills in Demand visa and the National Innovation visa will commence on 7 December 2024 and in support of this, has now released the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Developed by Jobs and Skills Australia following extensive labour market analysis and stakeholder consultations, the CSOL will apply to the ‘Core Skills’ stream of the new Skills in Demand visa program as well as the ‘Direct Entry’ stream of the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa.

The CSOL is comprised of 456 occupations, including the following new occupations which are not currently on the skilled occupation lists applicable to the current TSS visa program:

  • 142111 Retail Manager (General)
  • 149999 Hospitality, Retail and Service Managers nec
  • 225114 Content Creator (Marketing)
  • 261315 Cyber Security Engineer
  • 261316 Devops Engineer
  • 261317 Penetration Tester
  • 262114 Cyber Governance Risk and Compliance Specialist
  • 262115 Cyber Security Advice and Assessment Specialist
  • 262116 Cyber Security Analyst (includes ICT Security Analyst)
  • 262117 Cyber Security Architect
  • 262118 Cyber Security Operations Coordinator
